Untitled Goose Game is a triumph on several fronts. It’s an independent darling, it was developed in Melbourne by House House and it captured the limelight like no other game this year.
It was a social media powerhouse and even managed to make the nightly news as it continued its post-release tear. To think the game was a by-product of a stock photograph featuring a goose which led to this insane goose simulator that sees you honk, slap and prank the English well-to-do. Though their diet traditionally consists of shoots, bulbs and berries, this goose consumes chaos and makes domestic terrorism downright playful.
In his review, Harry said: “It’s clear that Untitled Goose Game is a labour of love from House House. It’s an entertaining honk-filled romp that’s guaranteed to satisfy anyone’s wanting to become a goose. Your first playthrough will no doubt be your best due to the restrictive design, but the hidden objectives and unique environments offer plenty of reason to explore and experiment with its charming world and characters. There’s never been a better way to simulate being a goose.”
Press Start Australia gave Untitled Goose Game a 7.5 out of 10, while it holds a score of 79 on Metacritic.
Josh said: When a simple concept is stripped of all the extra bells and whistles, you are left with something that can be pitched to anyone on the street, clear as day. Be a naughty goose. Because being a naughty goose is fun, funny and a good way to spend three hours away from the overloaded real world. To call it a crowd pleaser is an understatement.
Ewan said: Indie studios crushed it again this year, but no independent release was quite as mischievous as Untitled Goose Game. And by golly didn’t it take the world by storm?! The Melbourne-based studio, House House, achieved something remarkable. They took an often overlooked but clearly loathed animal, and honked out a simply joyous game full of crafty puzzles, quirky characters and endless meme potential.

Untitled Goose Game is an excellent example of just how creative the games industry can be and how a unique idea can so easily captivate the masses when perfectly executed. At its very simplest, this is a game about an irritating goose, hellbent on inconveniencing just about everybody that has the utter misfortune of crossing paths with them. The titular goose can run, flap, pick up items and most importantly, honk its way through various puzzler levels, with only a brief to-do list to guide players through tasks such as “have a picnic” and “get thrown over the fence”. It’s up to players to get creative and employ their imaginations to figure out how to complete these tasks in a dynamic game world with a charming and ambient art style.
