#6 – It Takes Two

Though it’s unlikely Josef Fares would introduce himself as the “Fuck the Oscars” guy, it’s fair to say he’ll always be known for it. What he can introduce himself as, however, is the creator of 2021’s Game of the Year, as judged by critics and fans at this year’s The Game Awards.

His first title Brothers had players working to reconcile problems with themselves while A Way Out had players working together to go on the lam in a high-stakes crime drama. It Takes Two is far more like the latter in that it’s a continuation of Fares’ insistence that games should be played together, although it’s got a family-friendly coat of paint on it. It’s colourful, vibrant, and is hands-down the year’s most complete co-op games.

After all, it takes two, baby, to make a dream come true.

In his review, Brodie gave It Takes Two a 7.5/10 and said: “Although the story of Cody and May doesn’t meet the standards set by the game’s varied gameplay, It Takes Two sees the continued form of Josef Fares and his team at Hazelight in crafting wonderfully creative and engaging worlds for players to share and collaborate in. It Takes Two is a co-op experience that’s second to none, which offers more ways than you can imagine to experience these larger-than-life play spaces.”

As it stands on Metacritic, It Takes Two is sitting at 89 based on 32 critic reviews.
