Balatro Has Sold 2 Million Copies With A Major Gameplay Update Set For 2025

Who'd have thunk?

Balatro developer localthunk has revealed that the incredibly-moreish “poker roguelike” has crossed a huge sales milestone, selling two million copies since launching for PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch in February this year.

Along with celebrating the huge achievement, the game’s official X account also announced that the game will be getting its first “major gameplay update” in 2025, which will bring new ideas and strategies to the game, and it’ll be completely free. “Two more surprises” are also set to be unveiled in the coming weeks.

Balatro recently announced a physical release dubbed the Balatro Special Edition, which comes with 10 actual cards based on some of the most iconic ones found in the game. Pre-orders are live right now for $49.

Developer localthunk also recently made an impact with a comment stating he felt so strongly about Balatro never becoming a gambling title that he’s genuinely written into his will that the IP may never be sold or licensed to a casino or gambling company.

I scored Balatro a huge 9.5/10 in my original review, writing, “Balatro is one of those deceptively-approachable ideas that will absolutely consume you the more you start to puzzle out its secrets and intricacies. It somehow makes playing the same game over and over feel completely fresh in possibility each time, and doles out just enough new ideas and just the right amount of intoxicating feedback to keep you thinking “one more game” well into the AM.”

The game received a significant update earlier this year which tweaked some mechanics and rules to balance out some difficulty spikes that early players were coming up against.
