DOOM And DOOM II Have Been Re-Re-Released In New Definitive Versions Today

Double DOOMs.

The early 90s classics DOOM and DOOM II are back! Again! Announced as part of the QuakeCon 2024 festivities, these two original entries in the long-running FPS franchise have gotten fresh re-releases that are available today on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch and PC.

These new versions are available for $17.95 (depending on platform) and are also offered as a free upgrade to owners of previous versions on the same platforms. They include the same content and enhancements found previously, along with brand-new content including online cross-platform deathmatch and co-op, a brand-new episode titled Legacy of Rust, created in collaboration with Nightdive Studios and MachineGames, and a DOOM II edition of the super-popular IDKFA soundtrack by Andrew Hulshult.

Here’s all of the new stuff in these enhanced versions of DOOM and DOOM II:

  • Online cross-platform deathmatch and co-op for up to 16 players
  • Community published single-player mod support with an in-game mod browser
  • Optimized renderer
  • Accessibility options
  • Optional IDKFA soundtrack by Andrew Hulshult selectable alongside the original midi soundtracks – including the never-before-released IDKFA version of DOOM II
  • Improved performance with multithreaded rendering supporting up to 4K resolution and 120 FPS on Xbox Series X|S, PC and PlayStation 5
  • Brand new episode, “Legacy of Rust,” with new weapons and demons made in collaboration by individuals from id Software, Nightdive Studios, and MachineGames

Next and potentially even more interesting is DOOM SNES from Limited Run Games, which is an updated port of the original 16-bit version of DOOM for (you guessed it) the SNES – shipped on a fully playable SNES cartridge. It’ll arrive in both a Standard Edition and a Collector’s Edition at some point in 2025, with the latter being limited to just 666 copies.
