It’s time for our annual countdown to award the very best games this year had to offer. Over the next ten days, we’ll count down our top ten games of 2024.
As always, the votes of each Press Start team member, weighted from #10 through to #1, were collated to compile our collective very best for the year that was. Games worthy of one’s top spot would be awarded a maximum of 10 points and the values would descend to their tenth selection, which would receive a single point.
Just as nobody could compel themselves to believe in PlayStation’s live-service strategy, Helldivers 2 felt like a spark and served as proof of life that, when done right, there’s nothing as good as a big, bombastic, war-on-bugs that, like a magnet, draws old friends to one another again.
With this sequel steering in an unexpected direction, Helldivers 2 felt like a call to arms for gamers all over as the game sold like hotcakes across its two platforms, crossing twelve million units sold in just three months.
Plus, its player-first approach to content and tremendous marketing, which framed this intergalactic war of attrition through good old-fashioned yucks, meant the game was always destined to make a splash.
The game is seeming to go from strength to strength, with a brand new content package, titled Omens of Tyranny, dropping at The Game Awards, as well as crossovers with other once-prolific IPs like Killzone popping up left, right, and centre. Whether you’re putting in a few hours, or a thousand, there’s a rollicking good time to be had with Helldivers.

“Helldivers 2 is a masterstroke, a sensational sequel to one of my favourite games and an absolute must play for people who enjoy simple, cinematic, and irreverent fun. The shift in perspective, the upgraded graphics and sound design, and the hard lean into satirical humour have launched it easily into one of my favourite games of 2024. On the review aggregator Metacritic, Helldivers 2 is resting at an average of 82.
