After departing Tango Gameworks in 2023, prolific game designer Shinji Mikami has reemerged with his new studio Unbound Games and an aim to deliver original IP, ranging between AA and AAA in scope.

While aiming to expand its staff size of fifty, Unbound Games is described on its site as a “fully independent company, developing high-end consumer games, creating original AAA titles.” Job listings confirm that the studio is at work developing an original IP, powered by Unreal Engine 5.

The studio also has the desire to work on smaller-scaled AA titles in the future, according to an interview with Unbound’s Masato Kimura, a frequent and long-time collaborator with Mikami whose previous credits include Devil May Cry, Ghostwire: Tokyo, and Hi-Fi Rush.

“I can’t give away any details yet, but it’s a AAA title for high-end consumers,” Kimura said.

“However, to be honest, it would be difficult to do the same kind of work in Japan as overseas AAA titles, which require hundreds of billions of yen and hundreds of people working for five to seven years to create.

“So, we’re aiming for AAA quality and AA content, which is why we’re creating a title that offers a rich gaming experience and allows you to be completely immersed in its world.”

The company’s profile page reveals that its current staff, which, again, is looking to expand in the coming months, has worked on titles such as Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Shadow of the Colossus, and Hi-Fi Rush.
