According to a report by Bloomberg, Epic is on track to launch the first video game as part of its strategic partnership with Disney later this year.
The report suggests that the game will be an extraction shooter with mechanics similar to Arc Raiders, except players will take on the roles of Disney characters battling enemies until an extraction point is reached. According to the report, internal reviews have “expressed concerns” due to the mechanics’ lack of originality.
“This is not reflective of the ambitions of the Disney collaboration,” said Liz Markman, Senior Director of Communications at Epic.
We are building a new games and entertainment universe of Disney experiences.”
Pixar, and by extension Disney, has enjoyed several partnerships within Fortnite already, with their latest collaboration, Toy Story, rolling out this week. All of this comes on the back of Disney and Epic entering a $1.5 billion USD strategic partnership a couple of years ago, that’d see the two media giants “construct a whole new virtual universe connected to Fortnite.”
The report also refers to inside word from people familiar with the internal dealings between Disney and Epic that two more games are expected to be released as a part of the deal; however, after middling internal reviews for the second, resources for the apparent third game were reallocated to assist on the other two projects in response to Disney’s displeasure over the timeliness of the projects.
This report comes just weeks after Epic let go of 1,000 employees following a further downturn in Fortnite engagement despite the game generating an expected $6 billion USD in 2025 alone.
