NRL has confirmed that a new Rugby League game is in the works and due for release in 2021. The confirmation comes in response to an email from a fan questioning the NRL about the future of Rugby League in games.
The email reads:
We are currently working on a new release for the 2021 season and we will be sure to let supporters know once a release date has been confirmed. In the meantime, other Rugby League games can be purchased here: www.trublu.com.au
The last Rugby League game to release was Rugby League Live 4 which was developed by Melbourne’s Big Ant Studios in 2017. Big Ant has developed every game in the series since the original in 2003. Big Ant has already confirmed that they will not be developing the next game in the series. It’s unclear at this point who will take over development, but it’s likely that it will be developed overseas. Release platforms also aren’t clear, although it’s likely that we’ll see the game release on next-gen consoles as well as the current generation of consoles.
We gave Rugby League Live 4 an 8/10 in our review and said:
Rugby League Live 4 is a step in the right direction. There’s a level of polish that we haven’t seen in an Australian sporting game in some time and whilst there’s still some A.I issues, I never felt that they changed the result of the game. Attack is more realistic, which can lead to frustration when trying to get over the line, but the game rewards you for spending time with it and learning the new offensive/defensive mechanics. If you liked the last game, there’s no reason why you won’t like this one even more. The PS4 version of this game was played for the purpose of this review.
We’ll keep you posted when we know more about the next Rugby League game.
