PlayStation is finally releasing the next major PS5 update later tonight which will give access to the M.2 SSD Storage Expansion slot. I’ve seen a lot of people confused about whether this replaces the SSD already in your PS5 and it doesn’t, it’s a completely separate slot in your PS5 that is currently empty.
There are a few steps that you need to take in order to access this slot. Thankfully, PlayStation has made a video detailing exactly how to do this, so that as soon as the update drops (hopefully later tonight), you’ll be able to jump straight in and upgrade your PS5 M.2 SSD.
It’s important that you do the update before changing over your SSD as the PS5 will prompt you to remove the SSD if you put it in before doing the update.
All-in-all, it does look fairly simple if you know what you’re doing, and have a compatible screwdriver. The hardest part is definitely knowing exactly what SSD to get as currently there’s only a handful that we’d feel comfortable recommending.
