Fans who’ve received their physical copies of NBA 2K23 a day ahead of its September 9th release have spotted a somewhat alarming disclaimer on the inside of the packaging sleeve.
The disclaimer, which Press Start has sighted, reads:
“Please note that NBA 2K23 online features are scheduled to be available until December 31, 2024 though we reserve the right to modify or discontinue online features without notice. Visit www.nba2k.com/status for more information.”
Navigating to the website mentioned simply brings up the NBA 2K server status page, and amusingly whenever we clicked on the Terms of Service link at the bottom of this page the page would time out, so ‘more information’ on this particular message is seemingly not available. In a franchise so stacked with options for spending real-world money on in-game products, it feels slightly worrying that 2K is getting out on the front foot to say that they’re capable of pulling the plug at any moment, but it’s at least helpful that they’re setting a target date for the sunsetting of the game’s online service (even if it’s only two years away).

NBA 2K22 also comes in at a whopping 152GB, so if you plan on picking it up, make sure you’ve got that storage free. The game is out tomorrow Amazon has the cheapest price at $64.90 for Switch, $68 for PS4/XB1, $82.90 for PS5/XSX with free shipping.
