Final Fantasy XVI’s Creators Have Explained What The PS5 Brings To The Game

Making use of all that RAM-uh.

The PlayStation Blog has continued its series of “PS5 Creators” stories today, bringing us a chat with Final Fantasy XVI’s Director, Hiroshi Takai, focused on how the PlayStation 5 hardware has informed the game’s development and what fans can expect from the PS5 exclusive.

In the post, Takai-san speaks about working with the PS5’s sizeable 16GB memory allowed the team to render finely-detailed character and environmental models on top of high-quality lighting and shadow effects, as well as store all of the animations and effects for Clive’s wide range of combat moves. Meanwhile, the ultra-fast SSD gave them the ability to seamlessly flow between high-action gameplay and cutscenes and back.

The director also mentions DualSense Wireless Controller support, with the game using the adaptive triggers for things like opening heavy doors (something I experienced when I played the game recently) and riding chocobos, while sound data from the game’s cutscenes was used to create the haptic feedback effects to produce sensations like the movement of air.

In our hands-on preview of the game, we said “Regardless of the session having a more narrowed focus on combat and Eikonic battles, the two-and-a-bit hours I spent immersing myself in Final Fantasy XVI has painted a reassuringly positive picture. It’s been in good enough hands this whole time that I’ve always felt rather confident in the game to really bring the single-player Final Fantasy experience back into good stead, but knowing what I now know and playing what I played I’m almost certain that this will be the Final Fantasy to truly wow the world once again.”

Final Fantasy XVI launches for PS5 on June 22nd, 2023. Amazon has the cheapest pre-order price at $82 with free shipping.
