Mortal Kombat 1’s New Invasion Mode Is A Board Game-Like Adventure

Mario Party, but less violent.

Although NetherRealm Studios debuted another new character reveal trailer for Mortal Kombat 1 at this week’s Gamescom Opening Night Live 2023 showcase, it seems it had more to show with the PlayStation Blog sharing a hands-on preview of the game that reveals a brand-new Invasion mode with some neat-sounding features.

The folks at PlayStation Blog and IGN among others were able to go hands-on with Mortal Kombat 1’s story offering as well as this new Invasion mode, with the former sounding like a pretty traditional way to take players through this fresh timeline for the franchise, while the latter is a little more intriguing.

The PS Blog preview describes Invasion as a “board game-like RPG” that’ll have players exploring a diorama-esque map with a party of Mortal Kombat fighters, fighting enemies, picking up loot and earning Kurrency and goodies for the game’s other modes. IGN’s own hands-on describes it as a replacement for the Krypt/Tower modes of old with a more Mario Party-like vibe, sans dice rolls but with the same idea of a variety of themed events happening as you land on each new square.

NetherRealm will also reportedly be adding to Invasion over time with new content themed on an ongoing roster of invaders from various realms, including new challenges, new areas and even more gear to unlock. Invasion will even include familiar gameplay and mini-games from Mortal Kombat history like classic Arcade Towers and Test Your Might games.
