Sonic has had a rough decade (or two) but Sonic Mania managed to bring him back to life. Most of the team had the game in their top 5 of the year, feeling that it simply had to be in our top 10 for the year.
Steven said: “Turns out that fans actually do know best how to make a great new Sonic game. A game developed by dedicated fans working on retro styled Sonic fan games for years proves once and for all that Sonic games are good, actually.”
Matt said: “It’s the game I always wanted but never got – a true return (glitches and all) to the fast-paced side-scrolling glory that was Sonic The Hedgehog. I rate it so highly because it didn’t hamfist nostalgia into a new game – it did what it was supposed to and evoke it.”
Matt called the game a return to form in his review and gave it a 9. He went on to say: “Despite its flaws, Sonic Mania is the type of game that players can keep going back to over and over. It has the replayability of the classic Sonic games with minor modernisations for current day gamers, and is sure to appeal to old and new players alike. For a franchise that for a while seemed to flounder and suffer from subpar titles, it offers hope to fans that there will be more to return the series to its former glory.”
