Press Start’s GOTY 2017 – #2 Zelda: Breath Of The Wild

Matt said: Credit where credit’s due – Nintendo have managed to keep the LoZ franchise fresh throughout the years, and BOTW is no exception. While it may not have the depth that other open world games have, it breathes new life (pun intended) into an adventure game that stays relevant with each new generation of gaming. A must-have for all Switch owners.”

Ewan said: “Breath of the Wild was the Zelda game we’ve always dreamt of. It was not simply a great Zelda game, or a great Switch launch title, but a fantastic action adventure in its own right m, and one of the best the franchise has seen. Although combat mightn’t have felt as tight as Horizon, the game design and environmental puzzle solving was unmatched.”

Steven said: “Breath of the Wild is revolutionary, both in the context of Zelda and open-world games in general. More than any ‘open-world’ game before it Breath of the Wild offers players true delight in exploration. So many rules of past games that we’ve taken as unavoidable were thrown aside. A wall stops being a barrier when you can climb it. A tower is more than just a map unlock point – it’s a literal jumping off point to glide and further explore Hyrule’s detailed environments. I do feel that dungeons lost something in the focus on open exploration, but Breath of the Wild is a wonderfully bold new direction for Zelda.”

Toby said: “Breath of the Wild is one of the greatest games I’ve ever played. Nintendo’s open-world approach built on the premise of allowing the player to explore Hyrule at their own leisure and progress at their own pace, and it was a really smart decision. The almost universal sense of love and excitement about one single game was so wonderful and enlightening to engage in, and it really helped catapult the Switch to where it is today. Breath of the Wild is an essential purchase, and will remain as one of the games I cherish the most for a long time to come.”

Shannon called the game a whole new world in his review and gave it a 10. He said: “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will go down as one of the best launch titles of all time. Yes, technically it’s a Wii U game that was ported over to the Nintendo Switch, but Nintendo made the right decision in holding this game back. It perfectly compliments the Nintendo Switch and highlights why it has the potential to be such a great and versatile console. Many have doubted Nintendo’s ability to bring this series into the modern age of gaming, but they’ve done that and taken it one step further in creating one of the best open-world action-adventure games ever made.”
