Prince of Persia The Lost Crown GOTY

Press Start’s GOTY #6 – Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown

One to explore.

It’s time for our annual countdown to award the very best games this year had to offer. Over the next ten days, we’ll count down our top ten games of 2024.

As always, the votes of each Press Start team member, weighted from #10 through to #1, were collated to compile our collective very best for the year that was. Games worthy of one’s top spot would be awarded a maximum of 10 points and the values would descend to their tenth selection, which would receive a single point.

Although the story’s ending, so far as The Lost Crown’s team is concerned, isn’t exactly what anyone hoped for, their commendations are due for what is one of the year’s finest action games. They took a relatively dormant IP, which jumped the shark with Godsmack if you ask me, and spun it in a direction nobody would ever expect to pay off.

It might be billed, an award-nominated, as an action game, but The Lost Crown is, for all intents and purposes, a sprawling Metroidvania that features a connected world that very much plumbs the depths of Persian mythology and delivers a great sense of place on Mount Qaf.

It felt as though the athleticism of Sargon is visualised through the game’s many artful flourishes, taking urban and quasi-anime influences to create an incredibly stunning game in motion. With no sequel currently in our future, I can only hope there’s a bit of a groundswell for one after people pick up The Lost Crown, and all of its content, and realise what they’d been missing.

In our review, Steven scored Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown a 9 out of 10 stating:

“I thoroughly enjoyed The Lost Crown. It took me a little under 18 hours to finish the game with quite a bit of exploring off the beaten track along the way – and the next day all I wanted to do was pick the game back up and get to more exploring. It’s got compelling exploration, great feeling movement, engaging combat, and satisfying puzzles. Genuine innovation in the genre and smartly integrated accessibility features make The Lost Crown a game I heartily recommend.”

On the review aggregator Metacritic, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is resting at an average of 86.

Congratulations to Ubisoft Montpellier for earning a place in our top ten for 2024.
