A Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Game Inspired By God Of War Is In Development

No word yet on who's making it, though.

It sounds like TMNT fans on the way to getting an ambitious new video game based on one of the franchise’s more dark and gritty comic runs – The Last Ronin.

That’s according to Polygon, which has reported on an interview it held with Doug Rose, who’s the Senior VP for Games and Emerging Media over at Paramount Global. Rosen revealed to the outlet that work was underway on the game, which is poised to be an action RPG that supposedly takes inspiration from PlayStation’s most recent God of War titles.

What’s interesting about this particular title is that The Last Ronin storyline is set in a far-future timeline where not all of the turtles remain alive, which Rosen confirms will be the same in the video game adaptation, putting players in the shoes of just one of the turtles – though he doesn’t rule out flashback sequences where the others could appear. In the comics, the hero is a mysterious member of the original TMNT team that wields all four characters’ weapons, which to me sounds like it could lend itself quite well to an action game.

Rosen wouldn’t confirm with Polygon which studio was developing the game, and maintains that it’s a few years away from being released, but says he’s confident that they’ve found the right partner to produce this AAA Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game targeting an older audience.

The Turtles have had some success in the video game world lately, with the Cowabunga Collection refreshing some of the older arcade beat-em-up titles while Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge served up an intoxicating new iteration that we thoroughly enjoyed, saying “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is the gaming revamp equivalent of the time Donatello took a perfectly good Volkswagen bus and upcycled it into the high-tech, tubular AF Turtle Van. Hitch a ride, dudes.”
