It’s been a long time coming, but it appears as though Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver is finally getting some kind of re-release/remaster treatment (alongside Soul Reaver 2, which is nice I suppose).
Though an official announcement is yet to happen, over at San Diego Comic-Con which is kicking off now and through the weekend, at least one show-goer has spotted and shared a very interesting display of some upcoming statues based on the classic Crystal Dynamics games. While the statues themselves are cool but unsurprising on their own, it’s a plaque that was placed in front of each of them calling out “Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & II Remastered” that’s interesting, given we didn’t know that was a thing.
Naturally, said plaques now appear to have been removed from the display, but not before the images were shared to Resetera. And while there’s always the slim chance that someone working for Dark Horse went and created an entire logo for a pair of non-existent remasters and then put it on display with their product at SDCC 2024, the better guess is that an announcement is impending and somebody mistakenly jumped the gun on it.
Along with the admittedly-cool looking statues of Kain and Raziel, a Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver prequel graphic novel is also on the way, titled Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver – The Dead Shall Rise, so there definitely seems to be some love for the series and a lot of activity, making the idea of these supposed remasters all the more plausible.
The original Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver launched in 1999 for the PlayStation, swiftly followed by ports to the PC and SEGA Dreamcast, and was a 3D action-adventure follow-up to the earlier Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. It spawned multiple future games, including Soul Reaver 2 (which wasn’t as well-received) but the series has been largely dormant for the last two decades.
