As discovered by X user, Timur222, Bethesda has filed a trademark for something called “Starborn,” and it’s got Starfield fans convinced that it’s the name of the game’s next major expansion after the yet-to-be-released Shattered Space.

The game’s director and producer, Todd Howard, recently revealed in an interview with YouTuber, MrMattyPlays, that the studio is very much thinking toward releasing new expansions for Starfield on an annual basis, and confirmed that the next one after Shattered Space is already in planning, so the trademark could certainly be a part of that process.
The universe is full of possibilities though, and who knows? Starborn could be something entirely separate from gaming a la Prime Video’s Fallout TV adaptation, or just some new marketing beat. The trademark covers the use of the word Starborn across everything imaginable, as is standard, from video games to movies and TV to merchandise.
Starfield spoilers below.
For context, the term Starborn comes from a group of beings within the game that appear once players have collected enough Artefats, and have the ability to traverse between universes thanks to a special portal known as the Unity. It’s fair to say that they’d make for an interesting focal point in a potential new expansion, especially a couple of years post the base game’s launch when fans who’ve seen and done everything are keen to get an expanded look at the game’s world.
We got our first look at Starfield’s only announced expansion so far, Shattered Space, at the recent Xbox Showcase in June, although we still don’t have a firm release date outside of “2024.”
Shattered Space will be centred around House Va’ruun, the interstellar government formed around the worship of the Great Serpent, and see players investigate a frightening cosmic threat while exploring a brand new planet. It’ll feature new and unique weapons, spacesuits, and gear in this all-new adventure. Check out the trailer below:
