Magic: The Gathering’s latest Universes Beyond expansion, Marvel’s Spider-Man, swings into the stores featuring everyone’s favourite web-slinging hero, multiverse cameos, and some new mechanics into the world of Magic.

Thanks to Wizards of the Coast, we received a kit to check out the set and see which cards we pulled.

We managed to pull one of the sought after cards from the set. While it’s not the top level rarity variation that’s going for five figures last time I checked. The Soul Stone is pretty popular because it gives both mana ramp and card advantage, making it useful at any stage of the game.

The key highlight card I managed to pull was this one – the Anti-Venom, Horrifying Healer which I’m pretty keen to run. I’ve been eyeing a new commander deck and as someone who hasn’t dived into white. As someone whose played stompy mono green that swings hard, the reanimation synergy of this card is something I’m keen to give a whirl.

As a collector of fancy themed shiny lands (yes I have a binder for them) – Marvel’s Spider-Man fits nicely onto this empty page featuring different locations around New York which is Spider-Man’s playground.

The set also introduces two new elements, Web-Slinging and Mayhem into the mix.

Web-slinging is a no brainer addition to the game. The new keyword ability that lets you cast a card for an alternate (often reduced) cost if you return a tapped creature you control to your hand. This goes hand in hand with what Spider-man is all about, the agility and bouncing on and off the battlefield.

The second major mechanic, Mayhem, lets you recast a card from your graveyard for an alternate cost, but only on the turn it was discarded. Both bring flavour from the iconic series into the world of Magic the Gathering.

As a fan of the comics and movies (the Sam Raimi ones to be accurate) in general – Spider-man arriving to Magic The Gathering is a combination of two favourite things for myself. While it’s no Lord of the Rings, which is by far my favourite series to hit Magic the Gathering – the spiderman treatments and cards are a great dose of nostalgia for me and for many other fans as well.
