After it was reported last week that the upcoming Star Wars Jedi: Survivor would creep up to Call of Duty levels of bloat, it’s perhaps no surprise to learn that even the game’s physical copies will force a download before you’re able to play.
As the game clocks in at far larger than the capacity of even a dual-layered blu-ray disc, Jedi: Survivor isn’t one you’ll be able to simply pop in and play.
The game’s behemoth 150GB file size is likely to be attributed to the game’s 4K textures, which will only be available for the PlayStation, Xbox Series X and PC iterations. The Xbox Series S version, on the other hand, weighs in at just 44GB. It’s worth noting for Xbox users that the Xbox App allows anyone to pre-download a game regardless of whether they own it or not, so if you’re planning to hit the shops for a physical Xbox copy on launch day it might pay to start that download right now.
What exactly comes on the disc for Jedi: Survivor isn’t yet known, but Modern Warfare 2 set a worrying precedent last year by including just 72MB of its physical data on the game disc which meant the entire game needed downloading before play could commence.
Of course, a download isn’t going to damper our expectations for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor which we went hands-on with recently, saying “The game feels familiar but almost entirely unmoored from the trappings of the original, able to strike its own unique visual and mechanical vibe that honours the best of its predecessor but pushes its ideas and characters into far cooler new territory. It can be next to impossible to follow up on a beloved first entry but Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order looks set to stake its claim as the bold, dark and deeply interesting middle chapter of Respawn Entertainment’s own potential Star Wars trilogy.”
