PlayStation has today announced that Hori is releasing an officially licensed Mini Wired Gamepad for PlayStation 4. The controller is 40% smaller than a regular DualShock 4 and is aimed at younger gamers.
The controller will be wired but (10 ft cable) contains most of the functions needed to play all PS4 games. It has the right/left analogue sticks, R1/L1/R2/L2 buttons, directional buttons and action buttons. Sony is saying that touch pad inputs can be simulated using the left or right sticks. It doesn’t include the speaker, light bar, vibration and other premium features.
An Australian release date/price has not yet been confirmed but it’s coming to America in blue later this year. It’ll be $29.99 which isn’t too bad for an officially licensed controller.
I can’t help but feel that this is a direct response to Nintendo’s Joy-Con which is definitely accessible for younger gamers with it’s smaller form-factor. The DualShock 4 can be overwhelming (and large) for newcomers and younger gamers alike.
