Western Digital announced a bunch of new products in its WD_Black range earlier this morning.
The most interesting in the range is their new SN850 PCiE Gen 4 M.2 NVME SSD which based on the specs, should hopefully be compatible with the PS5. It is capable of speeds of 7000MB/S for Sequential Read and 4100MB/s, 5300MB/s and 5100MB/s for Sequential Write across the 500GB, 1TB and 2TB variations. These are scheduled to release in the next 3-4 weeks.
Australian pricing is below:
It’s important to note that until Sony confirms which SSDs are compatible, you shouldn’t be purchasing anything, but so far, the WD_Black SN850 as well as the Samsung 980 Pro SSD both seem to match the speeds required by the PS5.
You can find out more about how the PS5/Xbox Series X handle external storage and what games you can play right HERE. In terms of where the slot for this M.2 SSD is on the PS5, we now know that it’s under the top side cover as referenced by the PS5 teardown video.
