While many of Marathon’s player base are busy surviving or killing in Bungie’s recently released extraction shooter, there’s a small subset of players who’ve banded together to solve the first step of Bungie’s elaborate post-launch ARG puzzle.
Gated behind the puzzle’s solution is the much-anticipated Cryo Archives map, which promises to bring more intense encounters and raid-like mechanics. People familiar with Destiny’s launch are hoping for it to be the game’s Vault of Glass moment. Throughout Destiny’s lifespan, Bungie frequently hid cool things, such as the Sleeper Simulant railgun, behind community-focused events like this.
The puzzle involved activating, in a specific order, wall terminals throughout the game’s first map, Perimeter, listening to audio logs left by Durandal, the game world’s rogue AI, and identifying certain cyphers which ultimately led to a Cryoarchives Systems website.
The website, which once had a series of broken feeds, has since been restored through the power of community and much smarter minds than my own.
Players are now hunting for the next step in this rather involved puzzle, which one might expect involves repeating the above steps within the game’s other levels, Dire Marsh and Outpost. But it’s certainly nice to see people coming together.
