Sony has revealed in its third quarter investor report that it sold 4.5 million PS5 units between its November 12th launch date and December 31st.
This is pretty much on par with how many PS4s were sold back in 2013 in the same time period (4.5 million).
Obviously, stock constraints played a big issue in this, but 4.5 million consoles sold in a six week period is still a decent amount and no doubt they’ve gone on to move similar numbers in the first five weeks of 2021.
When it comes to games Sony didn’t split these out into PS4/PS5 but they also sold 18.4 million first party games in the quarter from October to December.
As a whole, Sony recorded its largest ever revenue in a single quarter ($8.45B) and also its highest revenue in a single year ($22.74B), which set a new record for the entire industry.
It’s going to be interesting to see how the PS5 tracks against the PS4 long-term. We’ll keep you posted as more numbers come in.
Sony says the PlayStation 5 shipped 4.5 million units as of December 31, 2020.
There were also 18.4 million first party games sold across PS4 and PS5 in the quarter ending Dec 31, 2020.
