God Of War Ragnarok’s Improved Combat Has Been Detailed Alongside New Screenshots

New shield mechanics & weapon signature moves!

We know that God of War Ragnarok is releasing on November 8th and will provide access to all of the realms, but outside of that, we don’t know a lot about how the gameplay will be improved and expanded on, but thankfully this looks like it’ll change increasingly in the coming days and weeks.

Game Informer revealed earlier today that God of War Ragnarok is its cover story and they’ve kicked it off with a feature on the game’s combat and a bunch of new screenshots. You can read the whole feature HERE but we’ve highlighted the most interesting things below.

THE TRIANGLE BUTTON NOW PERFORMS WEAPON SIGNATURE MOVES

In God of War (2018), the triangle button was used to call your axe back and not a lot else outside of that, but that’s been expanded upon in God of War Ragnarok. When you’ve got your weapon in-hand (whether that be the Axe or Blades), you’ll now perform Weapon Signature Movies which are basically moves that are infused with elemental moves such as fire or ice.

The two that Game Informer got to see in action were called Frost Awaken and Whiplash which do further damage by either freezing or incinerating enemies.

DIFFERENT SHIELDS WILL PROVIDE TOTALLY DIFFERENT COMBAT EXPERIENCES

God of War Ragnarok’s differing shields will play a big part in combat. As we can see in the screenshot below, there’s totally different shields that not only look different in appearance but will change how you approach combat.

Game Informer got to see the new Dauntless and Stonewall shields. The Dauntless Shield is all about twitch reactions with you being able to parry at the last moment with the shield glowing red, which means you can then parry your opponent and stun enemies.

The Stonewall shield is more for those who want to take the attacks on and not parry them. This shield takes in all of the attacks and turns it into kinetic energy. One it’s fully charged, you can bang it on the ground knocking enemies off their feet. The shield apparently becomes unstable as it takes damage, which leaves Kratos vulnerable.

MORE ENEMIES AND MORE VERTICALITY

Outside of these things, the preview touches a little bit on the different enemies you’ll get to see in the game, which are very apparent in the below screenshots. It also talks about the bigger role that Atreus plays in combat and also the bigger sense of verticality in the game that takes the fight across different plains.
