One of the most exciting surprise announcements at last week’s The Game Awards was the reveal of God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla, a brand-new DLC expansion for Santa Monica Studio’s 2022 epic that’s available right now and for free.
With the game having sold over 15 million units as of November 19th, it’s an exciting thank you gift from the studio to fans and a great excuse to jump back into the game (which we scored a huge 9.5/10 in our review last year), so here’s everything we know about Valhalla so far including what’s in it and how to start playing:
God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla – Everything You Need To Know
What Is God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla?
God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla is a brand-new DLC for the game that serves as an epilogue to the base game, taking Kratos on a “deeply personal and reflective” journey set after the events (no spoilers here!) capping off the main story. In it, Kratos travels to Valhalla to overcome a series of trials while facing echoes of his past.
As a realm, Valhalla consists of a fresh take on the game’s signature combat with experimental ideas inspired by the roguelite genre. With each new attempt you make to conquer its trials, new combinations of enemies and events will appear, and with each death Kratos earns resources with which to grow stronger for subsequent runs along with both run-based and permanent rewards.
The Valhalla DLC was revealed with a December 12th release date, but as usual that hasn’t quite lined up for us here in Australia. Because we perpetually live in the future, it’s actually launching in the very early hours of December 13th locally. Here are the exact times across the nation that you’ll be able to get stuck in:
4.00 AM AEDT (Melbourne/Sydney/Hobart/Canberra)
3.30 AM ACDT (Adelaide)
3.00 AM AEST (Brisbane)
2.30 AM ACST (Darwin)
1.00 AM AWST (Perth)
6.00 AM NZDT (Wellington)
Do I Need To Finish The Main God of War Ragnarök Game Before Playing Valhalla?
Nope! Valhalla is a completely separate experience to God of War Ragnarök, so you don’t need to have made any specific story progress or reached a particular power level. Everyone playing the DLC is on a level playing field with progress happening as you continue to make runs. That said, this is epilogue content, so if you’re yet to finish the main game’s story you might want to do that first so as not to spoil anything for yourself.
Is The God of War Ragnarök DLC Available For The PS4 Version Of The Game?
Yep! Unlike some recent PlayStation Studios content, like the Horizon Forbidden West Burning Shores DLC, this one’s available to players on both the PS5 and PS5 versions of the game.
How Do I Download And Play The God of War Ragnarök DLC?
You can download the Valhalla DLC from the PlayStation Store for free right here – keeping in mind that you’ll need to own the base God of War Ragnarök game in order to make use of it.
Once you’ve got the game and DLC both installed, the Valhalla content will be added as a separate option on the main menu. All you need to do from here is load it up and play!
