Long-rumoured but officially revealed only as recently as last week, Need for Speed Unbound promises to bring the series’ trademark street racing to new, ridiculous heights with a variety of anime-inspired visuals and effects.
Among things like its cast of cel-shaded characters, over-the-top visual effects feature heavily during races and give the game a unique look. It’s a look that many are excited about, but it’s also gaudy and busy enough that some have been wondering if they’ll be optional. The good news for both camps is that yes, these are customisation options featured on the rides themselves and thus you’ll be able to apply them however you like – including not at all.
The official Need for Speed Twitter account has shared the short snippet below, showing how driving effect customisation works in the game:
Customize your style. Choose your driving effects. Get noticed.
Start with nothing and slowly push your style to its absolute limit. #needforspeed pic.twitter.com/wZv7a2B4xx

The account clarified that last bit in a follow-up reply, which also includes some potentially ill-informed advice about how cars work:
Yes, you can turn the effects off. In fact, you can choose to never put them on in the first place. Just like any other part of a car
