The Last Of Us Season 2 Won’t Cover The Entire Second Game

Looks like there's a lot more The Last of Us TV in our future.

Now that HBO’s incredible adaptation of The Last of Us has wrapped up its first season, we’re already beginning to learn a little more about the follow-up season that was confirmed to be happening back in January.

Speaking to GQ in a kind of post-mortem interview, co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann told the outlet’s Sam White that Season 2 of The Last of Us, as many fans might have guess, will not cover the entirety of the massive story in The Last of Us Part II. While the pair didn’t give away how many season they’re expecting it will take to cover off all of the events in Naughty Dog’s divisive sequel, they confirmed that it will be more than one:

GQ: People are also speculating how Season 2 will encompass such a large game. Will the next season span the entire course of the second game?

Craig Mazin: [shakes head] No. No way.

Neil Druckmann: It’s more than one season.

GQ: Can you tell us if it’s two or three seasons?

Mazin: You have noted correctly that we will not say how many. But more than one is factually correct. [Laughs].

Druckmann: Some of the stuff I’m most excited for [in Part 2] are the changes we’ve discussed and seeing the story come to life again in this other version. And I think it’s exciting because it leans into those feelings you had from the game, really heavily, in a new way.

Elsewhere in the interview, which you can read in full here, the two showrunners also alluded to the order and focus of events from Part II will be identical in some areas in the TV adaption and quite different in others. They’ve also been taking notes in regards to some of the audience taking issue with a relative lack of Infected encounters across the first series, with Mazin saying “I personally have noted how much they liked those encounters. And I think we have some really interesting things coming that will be very satisfying without burying you.”
