With Battlefield 6 preparing to launch Season 3, all eyes are on whether EA can maintain the momentum the game has steadily built since release. The upcoming season looks heavily focused on delivering the large-scale warfare and classic ‘Battlefield moments’ sandbox with a strong emphasis on nostalgia that reconnects the series with its roots. Between returning weapons, gameplay tweaks, and the introduction of a massive remade map, Season 3 might kick off the title’s road to redemption.

Leading the charge is Railway to Golmud, a remake of the iconic Battlefield 4 map and currently the biggest battleground available in Battlefield 6. As someone who has spent countless hours playing the original version, the remake instantly feels familiar while still introducing enough modern changes to keep the experience fresh. It captures the large-scale combined-arms warfare the franchise is known for while refining the map flow to better suit the faster and more dynamic gameplay of Battlefield 6.

While the original was primarily a combined-arms battlefield where armoured vehicles and infantry fought side by side across open terrain, the remake introduces several modernised adjustments to improve the overall flow of the map. It still heavily favours vehicular warfare, but there is now far more cover, added debris, and environmental clutter that gives infantry better opportunities to rotate safely and counter vehicles when needed. The centre of the map focuses heavily on urban close-quarters combat, while the surrounding open fields allow vehicles to push aggressively and create space for their team. Speaking of space, Railway to Golmud is noticeably wider and more open than before, giving pilots more freedom to disengage from fights or evade incoming missiles.

The update also introduces several new weapons, including the return of some fan favourites. The M16A2 makes a glorious comeback in its classic burst-fire form, giving mid- to long-range players a strong option, especially on the new map. The M16A2 has always been one of my favourite rifles alongside the AEK from Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4.  (hopefully that returns in a future season too)

The only strange addition, however, is the ability to unlock a full-auto firing mode for the M16A2. After trying it out, it honestly felt uncontrollable. The recoil becomes ridiculously difficult which is not ideal so that definitely was a skip for me. Who knows, they might update it pre/post launch.

The new season will also see the RPK LMG and L115 Sniper Rifle dropping at launch. Everyone will remember the, one of the best snipers alongside the Gol Magnum in Battlefield 4. Both guns have been amazing to use in the preview and give additional variants for players to try out.

Tugging on the nostalgia of earlier Battlefield titles, EA Studios appears to be targeting longtime veterans by reintroducing familiar content. Revisiting Railway to Golmud is an interesting choice considering the number of maps available from the franchise’s history. While I wouldn’t call it a universal fan favourite, the sheer variety in gameplay the map offers will likely appeal to both old and new players regardless of their preferred playstyle. Live content for Battlefield 6 is looking like it’s back on track.

Battlefield 6 Season 3 launches from May 12, 2026.
