Aussies Will No Longer Be Able To Use Amazon US Starting From June

Amazon has today announced that from July 1st, Australian shoppers will no longer be able to use Amazon.com (as well as all of the other overseas Amazon sites).

Australians who visit these sites will be forced back to Amazon Australia’s website. this is due to changes to the Online GST which will require companies to pay 10 per cent of GST on all online purchases shipped to Australia from overseas companies. This rule currently exists, but only on purchases over $1000.

Amazon emailed their customers with the below statement:

“While we regret any inconvenience this may cause customers, we have had to assess the workability of the legislation as a global business with multiple international sites”

It’s a big deal in particular for customers, who were using Amazon US to purchase overseas credit cards for PlayStation Network/Xbox Live. It was also good for special editions that were exclusive to the American regions.

Thanks, SMH.
