Among Us Is The Next Video Game To Be Getting A TV Adaptation

Nothing sus.

Variety has reported that Among Us has been tapped to be another in a long line of recent video-game-to-TV adaptations, with an animated series in the works at CBS Studios.

Specifically, CBS Eye Animation Productions is partnering with the game’s developer, Innersloth, with Owen Dennis, notable for having created Cartoon Network and HBO’s Infinite Train as well as serving as a writer on Regular Show, tapped to be the show’s creator and executive producer. It’ll be animated by the folks at Titmouse (Big Mouth, Star Trek: The Lower Decks).

There’s very little information on the overall plot and/or characters in the Among Us animated series, aside from the knowledge that it’ll be based on the overall premise of the game – alien imposters attempting to sabotage a space-faring crew and murder the crew mates. It’ll be interesting to see how the studio approaches original characters, given that Among Us’ crew mates are entirely generic, player-customised characters.

As of yet, no streaming service or network has been officially attached to the series.

Originally released in 2018, Among Us exploded in popularity in 2020 thanks largely to the COVID-19 pandemic and a surge in popularity amongst streamers and content creators. It found its way from mobile game and PC beginnings to eventually land on all major console platforms by 2021 and also spawned a VR adaptation that’s available now for PC VR and Meta Quest 2 headsets and has a PlayStation VR2 release in the works.

The game has cleaned up as far as critical reception and accolades goes as well, taking home numerous trophies from the likes of The Game Awards, the British Academy Game Awards, the Golden Joystick Awards and many more, commanding a respectable 85 on Metacritic. It’s also spawned an empire of Among Us merchandise and other tie-ins – now including an animated TV series, evidently.
