Sea Of Stars Has Racked Up Over 4 Million Players Since Launch

That's a lot of Wheels.

Sabotage Studios, the folks behind Sea of Stars (and the excellent The Messenger) are celebrating a massive milestone with over 4 million players having jumped into Sea of Stars since launch.

The retro-styled RPG has been a critical hit after debuting in August, holding an 87 on Metacritic and taking home multiple end-of-year awards including Best Indie Game at The Game Awards and Best Indie Game at the Golden Joysticks. That 4 million number is of course helped along by the game’s inclusion on both Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus Extra, but it’s impressive nonetheless (and if you’re yet to give it a go, you definitely should!).

Sea of Stars is the game of my dreams, and seeing its quest resonate so strongly with players and critics means the world to everyone at Sabotage,” said game director Thierry Boulanger. “The team behind this game is the most talented and dedicated group I could have ever hoped to create Sea of Stars with, and I’m again reminded of their brilliance as we progress with creating Sea of Stars’ upcoming DLC, Throes of the Watchmaker. For fans to have recognized our adventure in such an incredibly prosperous year for RPGs alongside new arrivals from the genre’s biggest franchises … we simply just cannot thank you enough for supporting us, and we can’t wait to show you what’s next for Sea of Stars.”

We gave Sea of Stars a huge 9/10 in our review, saying “Sea of Stars is simultaneously a love letter and modernisation of the legendary turn-based RPGs of old. It retains everything that made them such a core part of the industry so many years ago, while poking fun at tropes and conventions in an entertainingly self-aware manner. Much like The Messenger, Sea of Stars is another smash hit from Sabotage Studio, and is undoubtedly one of the best games of this year.”

iam8bit will also be releasing exclusive physical editions of Sea of Stars for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X and Switch in 2024.
