In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, which largely focused on Sony’s increased focus on entertainment, such as movies, music, and, of course, video games, Sony CEO Hiroko Totoki noted that the company has yet to decide on a release date for the PlayStation 6.
Even as analysts predict the machine could launch as early as 2027, the ongoing component shortage is cited as one reason Sony is hesitant to settle on a date.
“Considering that importance, we need to take some action. Otherwise, we cannot survive in this landscape,” Totoki said of the shortage.
The article notes that Totoki went on to double down on comments he’d made back in May about the console’s speculative launch date, confirming that there still isn’t one internally.
It was reported two years ago that AMD outbid Intel and Broadcom for the contract to supply chips for the PS6 after also being the supplier for the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro chipsets.
