The PS6 Will Seemingly Use An AMD Chip To Ensure Backwards Compatibility

PS5 Pro who?

Reuters is reporting that AMD landed the contract to provide the chip for the PS6, after a bidding process took place against Broadcom and Intel in 2022.

Ultimately, the report suggests that it was the fact that AMD created the chipset for PS5 and PS5 Pro that was the crucial point for Sony deciding to go with AMD for the PS6 chipset.

“Moving from AMD, which made the PlayStation 5 chip, to Intel would have risked backwards compatibility, which was a subject of discussion between Intel and Sony engineers and executives,” Reuters claims.

“Ensuring backward compatibility with prior versions of the PlayStation would have been costly and taken engineering resources. Allowing PlayStation users to play games they have purchased for older systems is a feature Sony often includes in a next-generation system.” the report continued

It’s also said that a dispute between how much profit that Intel would take from each chip sold was another major reason why Sony decided to not even entertain the idea, and went with AMD.

We know from documents published during the Microsoft x Activision court battle that Sony won’t be releasing the PS6 until 2028 at the absolute earliest.
