The PlayStation Classic Runs Some Games In PAL Which Is A Bummer

This morning, Sony revealed more information about the PlayStation Classic, including what the UI would look like, how you’d use the virtual memory card as well as what would happen when you’d need to normally insert disc 2 for games such as Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy VII.

People really seem to be up in arms about the fact that some games run in PAL (even for the American version) and subsequently will only run at 50HZ which is a massive deal for games like Tekken.

This is the case for almost half of the ist of games, and quite frankly the better half of the list.

  • Battle Arena Toshinden
  • Cool Boarders 2
  • Destruction Derby
  • Grand Theft Auto
  • Jumping Flash!
  • Oddoworld: Abe’s Oddysee
  • Resident Evil Director’s Cut
  • Tekken 3
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six

Resetera user ‘Plum’ summed up why this is such a big issue:

1) Framerates on 60hz displays that aren’t 60fps or 30fps look terrible a lot of the time
2) They look even worse when running via HDMI on a modern flat-panel TV
3) Most 50hz PAL games ran slower than their 60hz counterparts
4) It’s not how the games were ever intended to be played

Sony also confirmed that the below games would support multiplayer:

  • Battle Arena Toshinden
  • Cool Boarders 2
  • Destruction Derby
  • Intelligent Qube
  • Mr. Driller
  • Ridge Racer Type 4
  • Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo
  • Tekken 3
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six
  • Twisted Metal

For games such as Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy VII, you’ll need to hit the “Open” button on the PlayStation Classic to swap over to the next virtual disc.

The PlayStation Classic launches on December 3rd for $149.99. It has the below 20 games:
