One Piece Odyssey Is Getting Some Great Reviews

A decent anime tie-in game?!

One Piece Odyssey launches this week on Friday, January 13th and reviews have started pouring in for the title, which comes from Pokémon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl developer, ILCA, and partly celebrates the franchise’s 25th Anniversary.

A demo for the game is available on PlayStation and Xbox right now, but if you were keen to know how the full game has panned out – there’s good news. The critical reception to One Piece Odyssey has been largely positive, with many reviewers praising its satisfying JRPG systems and compelling story and visuals.

At the time of writing the game is sitting at an aggregate score of 75 on both Metacritic and OpenCritic, which is damned respectable for a licensed anime/manga tie-in and puts it in league with games like Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot and Attack on Titan 2.

Charlie from Checkpoint Gaming gave the game an 8/10 in her review, saying “With dungeons that are filled with engaging puzzles and mysteries, familiar story beats under a new lens, and excellent turn-based combat, One: Piece Odyssey is one for the books. It is, with some needed small improvements here or there, the blueprint of how anime games should be. In a niche with historically good and not-so-good entries, Odyssey proves the One Piece future is looking bright.”

Liam at Push Square also gave One Piece Odyssey an 8/10, and said “No matter whether you’re a hardcore One Piece fan or a complete newcomer, One Piece Odyssey is an utter joy of a JRPG. Its combat system remains incredibly enjoyable throughout, and new mechanics provide depth and strategy in droves. Most certainly the highlight of the experience, but with fun exploration to boot, you’re always assured of a good time. One Piece Odyssey plays a lot like Dragon Quest XI, and it’s not that far off being just as good as it.”

Natasha at Screen Rant scored it a slightly lower 7/10 but was still positive about the game, saying that despite some pitfalls, “…One Piece Odyssey is a success in storytelling, animation, and combat style. With a satisfying conclusion, One Piece Odyssey opens up a new world of potential storytelling in the One Piece universe. It’s also proof that, if done correctly, games adapting iconic or expansive manga can be strong – if not groundbreaking – entries in the JRPG genre.”

One Piece Odyssey launches on January 13th, 2022. Amazon currently has the cheapest price at $79.99 with free shipping.
