Sony’s Future President Reckons The PlayStation VR2 Will Outsell The Original

Five million is a big target to chase!

Sony CFO and soon-to-be President (replacing Kenichiro Yoshida), Hiroki Totoki, recently participated in a talk at this week’s Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference, where he spoke at length about his history with Sony and the company’s outlook going forward especially with regards to its PlayStation business.

There’s a lot of positive talk around the relief of PlayStation 5 supply and the current demand and sell-through, including the notion that 30% of current PS5 owners were not previous PS4 owners and so represent new customers to the current ecosystem.

One of the more interesting tidbits from the discussion though, was around the PlayStation VR2, which Totoki is clearly a very big believer in, saying that he thinks it has the potential to outsell the previous generation of PlayStation VR.

“We are very happy to launch VR2 on PS5. [With the] VR1, we sold over five million units, and I think we have a good chance to exceed that amount in the PS VR2,” he said.

Totoki backs up this claim by referencing forecasts for big growth in VR in the entertainment market and rich potential for VR/AR in general, which Sony will no doubt be hoping to capture with its new-generation VR headset.

You can listen to the whole talk here, which also goes into Sony’s acquisition of Bungie and how it plans to utilise the studio’s multiplatform and live service expertise and how they’re currently tapping into it through their other studios.
