At today’s Ubisoft Forward showcase, the world was treated to the very first, and massive, look at gameplay from the freshly-announced Star Wars Outlaws.
The game will star thief, Kay Vess, and her adorable animal partner Nix, as they seek their freedom and inadvertently find themselves some of the galaxy’s most wanted outlaws with bounty hunters and criminals at their backs.
It’s a fully open-world adventure set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, and it looks positively gorgeous in action. In the gameplay showcase we see Kay and Nix work together to make their way through a restricted area with stealth, before being spotted and engaging in some good, old-fashioned blaster combat (with some melee thrown in for good measure). Kay then takes to a speeder bike and races away from the scene, using a Dead Eye-style mechanic to pick off pursuers.
Kay then has to navigate just as fraught situations in conversation, choosing how to respond to some shady characters, and in the example shown she winds up getting herself in trouble and becoming Wanted in the area. We then see her shoot out into space, highlighting just how open this open-world game actually is, and it’s not lie before she’s pursued by the empire and needs to engage in some dogfighting action.
The gameplay walkthrough ends with a call to action: “So where do we go next?” … “Anywhere we want.”
Also, Nix is incredibly adorable.
