The Lollipop Chainsaw Remake Is Now Just A Remaster

Back to the sawing board.

Update: After already announcing a delay for the Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP, developer Dragami Games has now confirmed that it’s re-designating the game as a “remaster” and not a “remake.”

Producer Yoshimi Yasuda tweeted today, saying, “We have changed the game design of RePOP from Remake to Remaster based on your requests!”

It’s a touch unclear what this actually means for the end product, and it’s maybe hard to believe that fans were truly, specifically calling for Dragami to scale the project down to a simple remaster (unless you count the predictable whinging about “censorship”), but that’s where we are now:

Dragami Games, the folks behind the upcoming Lollipop Chainsaw remake, now known to be titled Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP, have revealed that the game is being delayed from its original 2023 release window to a Winter 2024 target.

Producer Yoshimi Yasuda, who was the CEO of Kadokawa games when it originally published Lollipop Chainsaw in 2012, said in a post:

“The official title is Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP.

“We are working hard on game development, but we need a little more time. We will do our best to create the game that you will love, so we ask for your continued support.”

The studio originally announced the Lollipop Chainsaw remake last year, sans the new title, describing that the game will have “a more realistic approach to graphics” along with a brand new soundtrack (due to licensing reasons). The game is being developed by a combination of original staff and brand new staff.

Yasuda said at the time, “Unfortunately, various factors resulted in things making it so that fans can no longer easily play Lollipop Chainsaw, and it has been some time since players have not been able to access the game on current consoles.

“We, the original development staff on Lollipop Chainsaw, think of the game as very precious to us, and did not want to leave it in limbo, where players who want to play it cannot. As such, we purchased the Lollipop Chainsaw intellectual property from Kadokawa Games, and decided to develop a remake. We have already contacted Warner Bros. about development, and are being supported by them in this endeavor.”

Lollipop Chainsaw was originally develop-ed by Grasshopper Manufacture (of No More Heroes fame) with writing from James Gunn and a fairly star-studded cast. It launched in 2012 for PS3 and Xbox 360 and was extremely divisive critically, but grew a cult audience among fans.
