PlayStation Has Patented A New Controller That Can Store And Charge A Pair Of Earbuds

Great, another place for me to lose them.

PlayStation, who you might remember from such patent filings as “controller that can burn or freeze your hands at any moment,” has just submitted yet another controller patent based on a novel idea – storing and charging your PlayStation gaming earbuds inside your PlayStation Controller.

The patent was very recently filed and spotted by GameRant, and describes a controller that would be able to fit a pair of earbuds somewhere inside its housing, both for the purpose of storing and charging them like any other wireless earbud charging case but also unifying the pairing of both to a console or other device.

The patent document, which you can view here, seemingly shows a number of different concepts for how the earbuds could be stored, including on the back of the controller or by flipping up the traditional DualSense-style touchpad to reveal a small compartment, so it doesn’t seem as though there’s any one version of this idea set in stone.

And, let’s be honest, wouldn’t you want to be as happy as this person in the accompanying graphics?

Part of the patent contains comments from Sony on the concept, including “As portability and gaming anywhere becomes mainstream and important, so does the audio experience using microphones paired with a computing device,” which echoes a lot of what the company is doing right now with products like its dedicated Remote Play device, the PlayStation Portal, which it chose to reveal in full alongside a new line of PlayStation audio products.

PlayStation’s next actual venture into gaming earbuds is its first ever dedicated set, dubbed the Pulse Explore, which features dual microphones, and AI-enhanced noise rejection capable of filtering out background sounds. It comes with a charging case and also offers lossless audio.

The Pulse Explore is set to release later this year for $199.99 USD (around $300 AUD).
