Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Is The Second-Highest Rated Final Fantasy Of All Time

And the highest-rated game so far this year.

Reviews for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Square Enix’ huge middle chapter in its ambitious Final Fantasy VII Remake project, dropped overnight and it’s quickly shot up the Metacritic charts to land as the best-reviewed game so far in 2024 (though, to be fair, we’re just a couple of months in).

Not only that, but with 119 confirmed critic reviews and a metascore of 93 at the time of writing, it’s the second-highest rated entry in the catalogued Final Fantasy series to date, behind only Final Fantasy IX’s score of 94 (unfortunately, the original Final Fantasy VII never made it onto Metacritic).

Given the weight of expectation, especially after the game was crowned Most Anticipated at last year’s The Game Awards, it’s sure to be great news for eager fans looking to get their hands on it next week on February 29th.

Our own review scored the game a very solid 9/10, with Harry saying, “Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is an immense and expansive middle chapter of this ambitious remake trilogy. A reimagined and redefined behemoth of a game that simultaneously plays on nostalgia and forces you to question your memories of the original. While it suffers from some rote open world elements and a few technical issues, Rebirth is another magnificent entry into the gilded halls of Final Fantasy.”

IGN also scored it a 9 and wrote, “Final Fantasy VII Rebirth impressively builds off of what Remake set in motion, both as a best-in-class action-RPG full of exciting challenges and an awe-inspiring recreation of a world that has meant so much to so many for so long.”

Leah at GamesHub was even more impressed, giving it five full stars and calling it “…an altogether different beast than Remake, but with a perfectly-balanced levity to its tale of light versus darkness..”

And Charlie at Checkpoint Gaming said, “Final Fantasy VII Rebirth defies all expectations and is the new benchmark for what a remake should be. Bold and unapologetic with something to say but also true to its roots. I’ve loved, I’ve laughed and I’ve cried while playing this game and if you fall into the right crowd, you very will too. Provided is an unforgettable journey, a magnetic cast, and a world that is magic and an experience that is transcending. From combat to graphics to music to side activities to writing to performances, Rebirth is one for the books and I can’t wait to see where we go from here,” scoring the game a huge 9.5/10 in her review.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth launches exclusively on PlayStation 5 on February 29th. You can pre-order it now on Amazon for $99 with free shipping and pre-order price guarantee.
