Passkey For PlayStation Has Rolled Out Globally So You Can Ditch Your Passwords

Update 27/02: After being introduced in select regions, such as Australia and New Zealand, a few weeks ago, Passkey for PlayStation has now been rolled out globally.

As a reminder, switching to a Passkey for PlayStation removes your account’s traditional password as well as two-factor authentication and instead makes use of your phone, tablet or computer’s existing secure login (whether it’s PIN, fingerprint, facial recognition or something else) to provide universal access to your account that’s resistant to things like phishing or password cracking.

You can find more information below via the official PlayStation website, including how to activate a passkey for your account now. The process takes a few seconds and a couple of clicks, and I was able to start signing in via my phone and Windows Hello right away. It’ll also work with any other Sony services that you might have attached to your account.

What is a passkey?

A passkey is a password replacement that provides faster, easier, and more secure sign-in to your account for PlayStation Network. It allows you to access your account without a password. Instead, you sign in through your mobile device or computer using the same convenient device screen unlocking method like a fingerprint, face scan or PIN.

Why activate a passkey?

A passkey makes signing in faster by removing the step of typing out a password, letting you get into your games more quickly.

A passkey also reduces the vulnerability associated with traditional password-based systems: It cannot be guessed or reused, is tied to your account for PlayStation Network and can only be accessed by you.

Passkeys are safer than passwords because they are resistant to phishing and other types of cyberattacks like data breaches.

How do I activate and use a passkey?

You can set up a passkey in the security section of the Account Management settings on your PS5, PS4, computer or mobile device.
