Destiny 2 The Edge of Fate

Destiny is Kicking Off A New Saga With Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate

The Nine return.

After Bungie finally wrapped Destiny’s ambitious 10 year saga with 2024’s The Final Shape, they’re looking forward to what comes next in the space-faring sci-fi shooter. The Fate saga is a several year saga that kicks off with this year’s The Edge of Fate expansion where humanity is set on a collision course with the Nine, a group of cosmic entities that have been around since before even the Traveller. Bungie are looking to place the focus back on big questions in the Destiny universe as they build into an all new narrative.

The Edge of Fate is set on Kepler after the Guardian and other characters are invited to the planet. Making your own fate was a primary focus of the light and dark saga, but Bungie are looking to challenge that idea through The Nine. The story will kick off this year with Edge of Fate, with another expansion Renegades following within the year. The saga will continue with the release of Shattered Cycle and The Alchemist in year two. Each expansion is proposed to be similar to Rise of Iron in size, which is quite meaty given Bungie’s proposed cadence with these content drops.

Destiny 2 The Edge of Fate

Most interesting is the revelation that Kepler and The Edge of Fate incorporates many Metroidvania elements. You’ll unlock abilities that allow you to explore new parts of the planet, solve puzzles you might’ve spotted in previous missions, and engage with combat in new ways. This is primarily done through Matterspark, which allows the Guardian to take new forms to shape and traverse the environment in ways previously impossible. One Matterspark ability shown was the Guardian transforming in to a small ball of Arc energy akin to Samus’s Morph Ball.

To shake up the live service aspects of the game, Bungie are bringing in world tiers, a revised onboarding process for new players, and a reward structure that looks to be shaken up quite significantly. A lot of it is sounding like the overhaul the game could really do with if it’s to keep up with other live service offerings. Free major content updates are also coming in place of seasons with the pivot to two paid expansions per year.

The Edge of Fate is set to launch on July 15th in Australia with Renegades coming on December 3rd. You can check out the reveal trailer below and the free Rite of the Nine event is available right now.
