The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom hasn’t even been out a week and players have already found an incredibly simple item duplication glitch. In fact, the glitch was discovered on day one by a Japanese Twitter user by the name of @Modoki_returns and has since been reproduced for all to see (and take advantage of before the inevitable Nintendo patch).
The exploit depends on a few factors, primarily that the item you’re duplicating is one that you’ve never discovered in-game previously (denoted by the ??? label when observing it on the ground), and that it’s stronger than any other item in that category you possess. The steps to then duplicate said item are below.
How To Duplicate Items In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
- Start by dropping any gear in your inventory that might be stronger than the one you’re hoping to duplicate
- Also ensure you have space in your inventory, and don’t have anything in that item type equipped
- Pick up the new item
- When the information box showing you the new item pops up, hit the “+” button to go to inventory
- Hit the “Y” button to re-sort your gear via strength
- Equip a different item to the one you just picked up, preferably one you won’t want later
- Leave the inventory
- The item you just equipped will now visibly turn into the new item you picked up
- Go back into your inventory and drop the item for it to permanently become the new one
Some extra tips for making this work are to carry around some low-level equipment to use as the throwaway for this glitch, and if you do come across something particularly juicy out in the world and pick it up without having prepared the glitch, just reload your most recent save and find it again. So far, there doesn’t seem to be a way to make this trick work for items in chests.
