After being arguably the movie of the pandemic’s early days, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has absolutely crushed it at the box office during its opening weekend with takings over $71 million USD.
This figure, of course, cements Sonic 2 as having the best opening weekend for a video game adaptation ever, beating out its predecessor’s record of $57 million USD from 2020.
This blockbuster sequel, which saw Idris Elba join the cast as the self-proclaimed sexy Knuckles, is set to eclipse the original’s total takings at the global box office of $319 million USD after having already amassed $141 million USD worldwide.
30 years ago, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 became the fastest-selling, highest-grossing video game of 1992.
Thank you for helping put Sonic 2 back on top again! https://t.co/ik17vL4KS8

There’s a lot of love out there for Sonic at the moment, from the furry controllers to the hope and expectation around the upcoming Sonic Frontiers. So to hear that the film is doing gangbusters while being received well critically is quite a boon.
