The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Review - Zelda With Master Sword

Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom’s Producer And Director Have Said They’re Interested In A Movie Adaptation

But it's not up to them, it seems.

Zelda fever has the world in an Ultrahand grip right now, with the highly-anticipated sequel, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, having launched on Friday to enormous critical acclaim and seemingly being played by every single person on the internet over the weekend.

With passion for the franchise in full steam, and Nintendo’s recent big-screen efforts bearing big monetary fruit, some attention has naturally turned to whether Link and friends might benefit from a similar situation. And while it hasn’t resulted in a definitive answer, the question has at least been posed.

Speaking to Polygon in a post-release interview, both the game’s producer Eiji Aonuma and director Hidemaro Fujibayashi were posed the question of whether the success of the recent Super Mario Bros. Movie might have them excited at the idea of a big-screen Zelda adaptation.

“I have to say, I am interested. For sure. But it’s not just me being interested in something that makes things happen, unfortunately,” said Aonuma in response, leading with the expected conclusion that the decision has to come from higher up than even the longtime series producer.

Fujibayashi adds, “Maybe the voice of the fans is what’s important here,” which is a nice way of giving the people some hope that enough of a public cry for Nintendo to greenlight a Legend of Zelda film might have a result. That said, the people have already voted with their wallets for more Hollywood Nintendo adaptations, given the absolute truckload of money that the Mario movie is making.

We gave The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom an astonishing 10/10 in our review, saying “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom builds upon Breath of the Wild’s robust systems to offer an experience that eclipses the original in practically every way. Not only that, but it works incredibly hard to restore some of the things lapsed players might’ve missed from the traditional Zelda experience, and it pays off in droves. While the novelty of its design will never be as impactful as Breath of the Wild’s debut, Tears of the Kingdom is one of the best Zelda experiences you’ll ever have.”
