The Next Super Mario Bros. Movie Has Been Confirmed For A 2026 Release

Let's a-go!

The “Mar10 Day” festivities don’t stop at LEGO, with Nintendo dropping some exciting new announcements, one of which is that a brand-new Super Mario Bros. movie is on the way, and it’s releasing on April 3rd, 2026 in the US.

The film is once again coming from Illumination, and this time it’s been announced that Nintendo and Illumination staff are working hand-in-hand to produce the movie.

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie, released last Spring, continues to be watched by many people, including over the holidays and into this year!” Miyamoto says in the video accompanying the announcement, which you can watch below.

“The team at Illumination who worked on the Super Mario Bros. Movie is also producing this new film, together with Nintendo.”

Illumination’s Chris Meledandri also confirmed that storyboarding and design work is already underway at Illumination Paris, with animation starting soon.

Miyamoto also teased that the world of Mario will be expanded even further with the new film, potentially teasing even more characters and worlds from the wider Super Mario universe making an appearance.

“This is Miyamoto. We are now creating a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros. This film is planned for release in theaters on April 3rd, 2026 in the US and many other markets, and throughout the month of April in other territories,” says a separate post from Miyamoto.

“We’ll let you know the details once we’re ready to share more. This time too, the staff at Illumination and Nintendo are working together. We’re thinking about broadening Mario’s world further, and it’ll have a bright and fun story. We hope you’ll look forward to it!”

In my review of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, I wrote, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie is exactly what you’d expect, sometimes for worse but overwhelmingly for the better. It’s a no-frills, digestible adventure that’s absolutely jam-packed with nods to the immense history of Nintendo’s favourite plumber, and crucially it features all the charm and fun that’s fundamental to delivering that nostalgia in a meaningful way. There’s at least a little something for everyone, young or old, gamer or not, but go in ready to celebrate 40+ years of Mario and Nintendo history and you’ll have a blast.”
