Square Enix is currently giving Final Fantasy XIV players a chance at nabbing the massive Stormblood expansion completely free on all platforms.
Between now and May 8th at 11:59PM AEST, anyone on Steam or PlayStation can claim the Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood expansion completely free of charge and keep it forever, even after the promotional period ends.
It comes as Square Enix is also running a Free Login Campaign for lapsed players to jump back into the subscription-based MMO for up to 96 hours at no charge, as well as gearing up to release Patch 6.4, The Dark Throne, which will expand the Duty Support system to Stormblood’s dungeons, meaning players will be able to complete them solo.

The catch is that you will need the “Starter Edition” of the base Final Fantasy XIV game to be able to play the Stormblood expansion, as opposed to the infamous free trial version that includes the entirety of A Realm Reborn and the award-winning Heavensward expansion up to level 60 with no restrictions on playtime, so you’re technically paying a little money to get access to this “free” expansion if you’re coming in fresh.
Still, Stormblood is a pretty substantial addition to the game so if you’re an existing player looking to sink your teeth into a bunch more content or you’re willing to fork out $20-something for the Starter Edition in order to secure the main game, two big expansions and 30 days of play time then you could certainly do worse.
The full details on the promotion can be found on the Square Enix Support Centre web page.
For a limited time, existing owners or purchasers of FINAL FANTASY XIV Starter Edition can add the Stormblood expansion to their account for free! Whether you’re excited to explore new lands, try out the samurai or red mage jobs, or fight for the liberation of Ala Mhigo there is something for everyone!
