7 Games I Want To See At The PS5 Games Event

Sony’s long-awaited PS5 game reveal event is taking place this Friday at 6am. It’s anyone’s guess in regards to what they’re set to reveal, so I thought I’d put some thoughts down about what I’d like to see. A few of these are obvious choices, and a few not so much, but I actually think that Sony is in a really good position. They haven’t really announced many games since the E3 2017 press conference where they announced Death Stranding, God of War and Spider-Man, so they should be ready to fire on all cylinders, so here’s what I want to see:

HORIZON ZERO DAWN 2

Chance of it being there: Highly likely

If there’s one AAA first-party game that I’d almost bet my house on seeing on Friday it’d be Horizon  Zero Dawn 2. The original game released well over three years ago, is Sony’s best-selling and most successful new IP of this generation, and it ended with a cliffhanger that sets up a sequel perfectly.

There’s been whispers about the sequel for some time now, with the game rumoured to have co-op and it featuring a larger world than ever. The game’s open world would be a fantastic showcase of what the PS5 can do. The original is also coming to PC this Winter, so it’s clear that Sony want to get it in the hands of the last few remaining people that haven’t had a chance to play it yet.

APE ESCAPE REMAKE/APE ESCAPE 4

Chance of it being there: Unlikely (but it should be)

You might not know this but the original Ape Escape was the first game to make use of the DualShock controller. It showed off how well two analogue sticks can work in a console game by using those two sticks to move Spike around whilst having full 360 control of his all important net.

Two sequels later, a couple of Ape Academy spin-offs and a fairly terrible PlayStation Move game, it’s time to bring Ape Escape back. I’d love to see Ape Escape 4 (this was apparently in the works before being cancelled), but a Remake would be fitting, given that the DualSense controller is going to release alongside the PS5 and seems to be just as innovative as the original DualShock controller, it’d be a great way to show off the haptic feedback. Make it happen, Sony.

SPIDER-MAN 2

Chance of it being there: Pretty likely

Just behind Horizon Zero Dawn 2, Spider-Man 2 would be the second game that I’d almost bet on it being at the event on Friday. The game released just a tad under two years ago, so I don’t suspect it’ll release alongside the PS5 at launch, but I do think we’ll see some kind of trailer for the game.

Spider-Man ended on a few little cliffhangers, was critically acclaimed (we gave the game a 10) and commercially successful, so there’s no doubt in my mind that that Insominiac is working on a sequel. Similar to Horizon Zero Dawn, this will be another game to show off that super-fast SSD, and show how quickly things load into the world.

JAK & DAXTER 4/TRILOGY REMAKE

Chance of it being there: Potentially

Similar to Ape Escape, Jak & Daxter (Jak II especially) will always hold a special place in my heart. Not only is it a fantastic franchise, but it was made by Naughty Dog, who have gone on to become Sony’s most prominent studio.

I’ve always been a little bit disgruntled by the fact that Jak 4 was cancelled. It was in development for the PS3 and was set to feature a darker, more realistic world than the OG trilogy, so I’m hopeful we’ll see Jak in some form at this event. There was a rumour recently that Bluepoint were working on a Remake of the OG Trilogy and I think that’d be a pretty nice thing to do before moving onto a new game, but I’m not holding my breath at this stage (as much as it makes sense to go back to the franchise).

GOD OF WAR 2

Chance of it being there: Maybe a show closing tease

When all is said and done, God Of War will go down as one of the most memorable PS4 exclusives for me. Alongside Horizon Zero Dawn 2 and Spider-Man 2, it’s a sequel that is obviously being worked on, but even though it released before Spider-Man, I’d say it’s the game I expect to see the least out of the three “obvious” ones.

If anything, I think we could get a little tease to let us know that it’s coming (which people expect regardless), but I don’t expect to get a significant gameplay showing, which is fine with me at this point, but I’d say it’s up there with my most anticipated PS5 games.

PLAYSTATION ALL STARS BATTLE ROYALE 2

Chance of it being there: Almost certainly not

Hear me out. PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale wasn’t a terrible game. It definitely felt like something was missing and could have used a little bit more polish, but the bones were there for something great. It was essentially sent to die by Sony, who didn’t put the money into marketing that it deserved and cut support on its post-launch content fairly early.

It featured characters such as Nathan Drake, Ratchet, Kratos, Cole McGrath and quite a few other PlayStation and third party heroes, but the game would definitely be better for the roster that Sony could utilise in 2020. You’d chuck in Joel, Ellie, Aloy, Atreus, Sam Porter Bridges, Spider-Man, Cloud, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Knack (ha) and a bunch of others.

I’d be shocked to see this happen, but I do believe that Sony need a game that utilises the franchises that incorporates all of the franchises and characters that they’ve spent the last 15-20 years building.

RESIDENT EVIL 8

Chance of it being there: A good chance

I don’t doubt there will be a few third-party reveals, but I think that Resident Evil 8 is almost a lock at this point. The rumours have been mounting up to suggest that it’s coming in early 2021 with PlayStation VR support. I still think it might be a little too early to reveal given Resident Evil 3 just came out a few months ago.

We know quite a bit about the game including the fact that it’ll be called Resident Evil Village and take place in a European setting, so it’s obviously deep into development, but it’ll just come down to timing at this point.

So there you have it, there’s just seven out of the many, many games I could have listed. What are you hoping to see this week?
