Official PS5 Faceplates And New DualSense Controller Colours Are On The Way

We’ve all been waiting even since before the PS5 released, but Sony has finally confirmed that it is releasing official PS5 faceplates in the form of console covers (the term Sony seems to be going with). This comes after a patent was filed recently.

Initially, Sony will release Midnight Black and Cosmic Red faceplates in January to match the previously released DualSense controller colours. They will cost $55 USD (roughly $77 AUD) which puts them at a tiny bit cheaper than the Dbrand ones, and these ones have the official PlayStation logo cut-out.

Sony has also announced new Nova Pink, Starlight Blue and Galactic purple DualSense controllers as well as matching PS5 faceplates. The controllers will also release in January 2022 whilst the faceplates in these particular colours will release in the first half of 2022. We’ll keep you posted when we have exact release dates.

Sony is dubbing this entire collection as the “Galaxy collection” which in my mind opens the door for a lot of special edition faceplates down the track. No doubt it’s still a little bit surprising we didn’t see these sooner, but I’d have to think it comes down to supply chain and distribution issues as well as Sony wanting to put all of its efforts into getting PS5 consoles out the door.

When it comes to differences, here’s what Sony says about the faceplates on its website:

  • Made by PlayStation: The only console covers made by PlayStation for PS5 that are designed to deliver the quality level you know and trust
  • Easy to use: Simply remove your original white PS5 console covers and click your new covers into place
  • Complete the look: Pair your new PS5 console cover with a matching DualSense wireless controller
